Barnes & Noble Conducts Book Drive

From now until after the holidays, Barnes & Noble in Flint will be conducting a book drive to benefit Ennis Center. Customers will be able to purchase books or gift cards for children of any age which will then be given to children in foster care or other Ennis Center programs.

The Barnes & Noble is located at 4370 Miller Road (in front of Genesee Valley Center). Please tell your family and friends and consider sharing the warmth of the season-and the joys of reading- with underprivileged children this holiday season.

New Round of Graduates Celebrate

A FSF graduating family accepts their certificate

Ennis Center’s Families Strengthening Families (FSF) program recently celebrated the hard work of participants with a Mexican-themed graduation ceremony. Twenty-four families voluntarily completed 14 weeks of training centered on communication, parenting, and other skills designed to strengthen the family unit. Previously deemed at-risk of separation due to homelessness or other issues, FSF staff worked closely with families in their home and at Ennis Center offices, to teach and encourage stress management, and positive communication to parents and children.

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling graciously attended, greeting guests and delivering a short speech with words of encouragement.

Graduating families received a certificate and a board game to help them continue to strengthen family bonds. In this first year of Ennis Center’s FSF programming, 60 families and over 100 children have been diverted from entering the foster care system.

First Recipient of Ernestine Moore Scholarship Award Named

Congratulations to Kenneth Williams, the first recipient of Ennis Center’s Ernestine Moore Scholarship Award. Kenneth began studies at Wayne State this fall and aspires to be an English teacher. Having survived a turbulent childhood including homelessness and the death of his mother, Kenneth is determined to do better for himself but has also found the joy in learning and new experiences. He writes poetry, plays chess, loves all kinds of music and is hoping to get his hands on some instruments soon. We’re very proud of you Kenneth, and are confident you can achieve all of your goals!

The Ernestine Moore Scholarship Award helps youth formerly in foster care with Ennis Center in their pursuit of continuing education. Award funds are generated from private donations in honor and in memory of Ernestine Moore who contributed tremendously to improvements in the child welfare system during her lifetime. As a social worker, attorney, and associate professor, Ernestine Moore was a tireless advocate for children in both her professional and personal life.

The first and most important step in helping children who have been abused, neglected, and/or abandoned, is ensuring their physical safety. Ennis Center needs caring foster parents to assist us in making a real difference in the lives of these children. We work closely with our foster parents and provide training and ongoing support. Summer Picnic a Success Thanks to Donors

Our Annual Summer Picnic was held on Saturday, August 6th with foster parents and children in fsoter care attending from Genesee, Oakland, and Wayne Counties. It was very humid and the threat of a severe thunderstorm had us packing up a little bit early but over 200 enjoyed games, crafts, food, and fun. This year we were so thankful to have Title Source donate $2,000 to cover the costs of this event! Other donors who helped make the day successful were:

Duffle Bag Drive Benefitting Kids in Foster Care

Flint-area friends: maybe you’ve heard on CARS 108 that Ivy House is hosting a Duffle Bag Drive for children in foster care this Saturday. The bags will be given to children when they enter foster care, move between foster homes, or return to their birth family. If you’d like to support this effort, head over to Ivy House at 1908 Robert T. Longway Blvd on Saturday between 8am-6pm.
