Can I foster a child of a different ethnicity?
Yes, but an assessment has to be completed.
Do I have to be heterosexual to foster a child?
No.
Can I be foster as a single parent?
Yes.
How old do I have to be to foster?
You must be at least 21 years old.
Can I be too old to foster a child?
Any applicant over 65 years old must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical and emotional task of being a foster parent.
Can I work and still be a foster parent?
Yes. Arrangements will need to be made for an alternate caregiver or day care of your choosing, who will be screened for suitability. State reimbursement for day care expenses is available.
Do I have to maintain a certain income level?
You must be able to maintain your own financial obligations.
Do I have the option of choosing the child I want to foster?
Our agency will offer placements to you and it is your option to decline or accept that child.
Will I be aware of the child's background?
Yes. You will be provided with all available information on the child and his/her needs.
What happens with the birth family?
The goal of foster care it to reunite children with their birth parents. Foster parents should not judge the biological family. The should help the child deal with feelings of loss and rejection while supporting continued involvement from the biological parents. Foster parents are expected to interact with the birth parents through our agency.
Will I receive financial assistance?
You will be paid an age-appropriate non-taxable room and board rate set by the State.
Who is responsible for the medical benefits of a foster child?
Medicaid coverage is provided for the child's medical needs.
Do I need a license to foster a child?
Yes.
How do I become licensed?
Your home must meet the State of Michigan's physical requirements and each family member must agree to becoming a foster family and will be interviewed on their personal history. Each member must also complete police and Protective Services clearances, as well as have a physical examination and TB test, among others. We will give you support through the licensing process.
How long does it take to become licensed?
The average time is from 12 to 14 weeks.
Is a foster parent permitted to use corporal punishment on a foster child?
No, this type of punishment is not allowed.
